5 tools to manage stress

We’re all experiencing an extraordinary amount of stress and anxiety as a result of the pandemic. We’re all in lockdown. Working from home. Home schooling. Dealing with financial difficulties. And the uncharted realities of an unknown future.

We’re facing a lot of change. And we’re just not sure how long this will last.

There are plenty of simple tools you can apply to help alleviate some of this stress and overwhelm. Give yourself a healing toolkit filled with easy to access remedies and techniques. The suggestions below don’t require a physical toolkit space but you might like to create a playlist or journal your tools. And, these 5 tools are free.

Meditation. Sit quietly, close your eyes and focus on the breath. Breathe in slowly for the count of 4 then exhale for the count of 4. Do this at least 3 times but you can do it as many times as feels comfortable, you don’t need to measure it. When you are done, sit quietly and notice how you feel.

Walking. Walking has always been considered one of the best exercises that anyone can do. Now more than ever, we need to walk to get oxygen flowing through the body and clear the mind. A few short walks each day or a really long one, whatever works.

Music. Get that playlist out and turn it up while you are in the kitchen making food with love or bounce around the lounge room to your favourite tunes. Alternatively, classical or meditative music can be soothing and create a sense of calm.

Smile. Remember to smile when shopping or out walking. We are all in this together practicing social distancing.

Community. Help those who need it, whether it’s your parents or the elderly person in your building or street or a friend. Stay in touch regularly because it is important that we continue to build and maintain our sense of community.

Also, it’s crucial to choose nutritional wholesome foods to maintain a strong mental, physical and spiritual sense of being. Eating well during times of high stress is vital to help maintain the immune system, cortisol levels and a clear mind.

Choose wisely. Live vibrantly.
