Adaptogens: What are they?

Adaptogens are everywhere. It’s hard to escape the health food industry without coming across them. But what exactly are adaptogens? And how can they help you?

Adaptogens are naturally sourced herbs or botanicals that, when used correctly, can provide many health and healing benefits. Think back to history when the medicine person had an apothecary full of dried herbs and roots. Adaptogenshave been used for centuries, filling both Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) shelves, and for good reason.

The term adaptogens was first applied by Russian scientist and toxicologist, Nikolai Lazarev in 1947. Lazarev was searching for a nutritional substance that would improve health, performance and longevity. As such, he described an adaptogen as countering adverse physical, chemical or biological sources of stress by raising non specific resistance, and allowing the organism to adapt to stressful circumstances.

The word adaptogens was formed to apply a next level of health supplement.

In the words of Deepak Chopra, Adaptogens are substances (a combination of amino acids, vitamins, and herbs) that modulate your stress response or reaction to a changing environment. Adaptogens help the body cope with external stresses such as toxins in the environment and internal stresses such as anxiety and insomnia, or any stress-related disorders.

So we understand that adaptogens have this unique ability to moderate external stresses impacting the body.

But they do so much more to improve and support overall health.

Most importantly, adaptogens keep our vital organs healthy. They create balance and homeostasis in the body. They stabilise blood sugar, hormones, the nervous system and the cardiovascular system. They support the body to help promote a well functioning liver, digestive system and skin.

Adaptogens are many and varied. Ashwagandha. Astragalus. Ginsen., Schizandra. Rhodiola. Let’s not forget the medicinal mushrooms such as Chaga, Reishi and Lion’s Mane. These are but some of the potent herbs available.

They are non-toxic and safe to take regularly, however if in doubt speak to your medical advisor or naturopath.
