Schizandra is a little red berry that is also a powerful adaptogen. It’s sometimes called the five-flavour-fruit because its has a complex burst of flavour that tantalises all the taste sensations on the tongue – sweet, sour, salty, pungent and bitter. It’s proper name is Schizandra chenensis and is a native to colder climates found in northern China, Korea, Japan and the far eastern areas of Russia.
This adaptogen supports both the brain and the liver for ultimate optimisation. It contains lignin’s which provide neuro-protective properties to enhance cognitive function of the brain. This gives clarity and promotes memory retention. The toning effects provide support to the organs. For this reason, Schizandra is often recommended to people suffering with serious liver conditions as helps reduce fatty acids and inflammation that can build up and cause sluggishness to its function.
This one is also good for the guys and the gals. Schizandra can provide balance to ease prostate inflammation, and it can help tone the uterus to reduce menstrual issues.
But you don’t have to have a serious ailment to take adaptogens. In fact, they work best when taken regularly as a preventive. If you are unfamiliar with adaptogens, check out my article here.
Colour is important in the foods we choose because like other berries that are red, black, purple or blue, they all contain high levels of antioxidants. We love antioxidants because they help reduce free radicals in the body, which are toxins caused from pollution, excessive sun exposure, and consuming saturated fats often found in packaged foods.
It’s always good to choose your supplements from a reputable supplier to ensure you are getting exactly the product you are purchasing, without fillers or additives.
Choose wisely. Live vibrantly.
