This week many people will celebrate the holidays and its usually a time of joy. A time of family. A time of friendship. However, this past year has been nothing short of challenging. Many countries are in an extended lockdown or moving into another phase. It’s disappointing. It’s frustrating. And it’s created an enormous amount of anxiety.
Implementing a few simple practices can create a little harmony.
Gratitude. Rest. Reflect.
Be grateful for all the amazing experiences you had had this year, however small. There have been so many acts of kindness and a broader sense of community. Be grateful for who you are. Be grateful for the beautiful people in your life.
Allow yourself time to rest. Rest without guilt. Rest can be sleeping. Rest can be binge watching Netflix. Rest can be sitting around lazily with your immediate family, enjoying home cooked food, laughing.
Reflect on your achievements. What were your goals for 2020? If you met them – awesome! If not, how can you revise them to be more attainable? What would like to build on and take further into the new year? What can you create? What can you enhance? It’s a great time to set your intentions for the year ahead. But first, it’s important to look at where you have come from, and congratulate yourself on all your accomplishments.
Create a safe environment by activating our sense of smell has a direct link to the brain and can develop positive thoughts and feelings. Burning a scented candle or aromatherapy oils in a diffuser can create a sense of calm.
Our brain is also very visual. Go for a walk. Look up and notice the colour of the sky. Notice the shapes of the clouds. Notice how the light of the sun dances through the trees and on the leaves. What can you smell. What can you hear. Spending time in nature can be very healing.
However you spend the holidays, take care of your self and of each other.
Choose wisely. Live vibrantly.
