Astragalus for immunity

There are so many wonderful plants and herbs that have healing benefits. Plants that offer adaptogenic healing properties, have the unique ability to create a balance in the body caused largely by stress, although they each have a targeted function.

Astragalus is one such adatptogen focusing on the immune system. It has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant components that can aid healing. Healing such as lowering blood pressure, lowering cholesterol and reducing heart disease, and lowering blood sugar which can assist with diabetes.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), astragalus is commonly used to treat colds and upper respiratory infections. TCM also uses astragalus to tonify and support the spleen. The spleen is largely responsible for filtering the blood, removing pathogens and damaged red blood cells. It keeps an even keel of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. You will often find astragulas as one of the key ingredients added to an immunity tonic prepared by a TCM or naturopathic practitioner.

Research has found that supplementation of astragalus taken by cancer patients on chemotherapy treatment recovered faster and lived longer. Additional studies have shown promising results with allregies or hay fever, hepatitis and HIV patients.

Be aware that astragaulus can be a diuretic, and it can interact with other herbs and medications. As always, seek advice from a naturopath or gp if you are unsure.
