Eating with the seasons

As the weather gets warmer in the southern hemisphere, the colours, shapes and smells of the summer fruit and vegetables begin to fill the green grocers shelves. Berries, peaches, watermelon, pineapple, salad greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, avocado, snow peas, radishes.

In the northern hemisphere the climate is cooling down and the leaves are burning bright with oranges and reds. The produce is on the opposite side of the wheel, with an abundance of root vegetables like parsnips, potatoes, beets, and apples, pears, oranges and mandarins.

Whether you live in the northern or southern hemisphere, it’s important to eat in alignment with the seasons. Eating seasonal foods is one of the best ways to ensure we are not only satisfying our bodies natural rhythms with the changes of the earth, but also that we are satisfying our own bodies nutritional requirements. Fresh produce from the ground, harvested and eaten without over storage or chemical tampering.

Additionally, eating seasonally means that you are receiving a variety of foods that are available as nature intended. Eating seasonally means that you are eating the colours of the food rainbow, and this is where the power of vitamins and minerals lays.

Next time you walk down the fresh produce aisle, take in all the colours, shapes and smells. Try something new. Delight in how it looks, how it feels and how it smells. Prepare your food with love. Food should be cherished because it nourishes us and brings joy.

Choose wisely. Live vibrantly.
